Engineering Materials and Coatings

The subgroup's activities are related to R&D of advanced coatings and bulk materials, including testing, bulk and surface treatments, as well as powders production and processing.

KEY RESEARCH ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

  • Thermal spray technologies : Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS), High Velocity Oxy Fuel (HVOF), and Low-Pressure Plasma Spraying (LPPS)
  • High-performance coatings for aerospace and automotive high-temperature applications,  Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC), abradable coatings, and overlay coatings
  • Wear- , cavitation-, and corrosion-resistant coatings
  • Electrochemical coating technology, functional and decorative coatings
  • Coatings for biological/biomedical applications
  • Coatings testing under simulated operating conditions using Thermal Barrier Coating testing (isothermal, cyclic oxidation and Burner-rig), an ultrasonic cavitation resistance test, a dry sand rubber wheel test, and a slurry abrasion resistance (SAR) test
  • Powder production and processing : high-energy milling, mechanical alloying, and spray drying techniques
  • Advanced characterisation of materials, coatings, and surfaces
